The Sea Grill restaurant, located within the grounds of the Puente Romano Beach Resort & Spa Marbella, offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Formerly the Hotel Puente Romano Beach Club, the interior was tired and dated featuring dark wood and a crumbling roof, which didn’t portray the right image for one of the world’s most famous hotels.
The place was in obvious need of renovation and refurbishment.
During October 2012, Cape Reed, architects ATD34 and a building team, were contracted to transform the entire beach club into a modern Mediterranean restaurant, renamed as The Sea Grill, complete with poolside bar and outdoor pool.
The first challenge was to clear the existing roofs of the old rotted heather roof covering and other debris. Secondly, the timber structures had to be strengthened to be able to carry the much heavier weight of the new Cape Reed thatched roofing , which is eight times heavier than the original heather roofing. To install the African reed roofing, over 1600 metres of autoclaved timber battens had to be fixed to the outside of the roof.
The project required Cape Reed to cover seven roofs with 180mm African reed, totaling 27,817 bunches of straw!
The wooden structures were enhanced by painting it in a classy white finish. The Sea Grill now offers a fitting ambiance perfect for one of the world’s prestigious restaurants.
